Dark and Other Stories is a collection of haunting tales set in the twilight of the Twentieth Century. Computers were new and telephones were not yet old, and electricity was coarse and unrefined. In "Dark," we explore what might feed on old-fashioned raw electricity, under conditions that only seem normal when not examined too closely. As "Hanging Valley Breakdown" suggests, you can run and you can hide but it would help to know what you're actually running from, on this very small planet. In "Remote," two veteran newspaper journalists learn that while unexplained disappearances can be hard to solve, it's the unexplained appearances that turn out to be impossible to crack. "Banjo" asks, where is the past, with all its ghosts? Possibly we are the past, and maybe we are the ghosts. In "The Stony Point Poltergeist," visitors who knock first don't always wait for an answer before coming in. In the final story in this collection, you can't expect all the coordinates to match up like they're supposed to when you're "Off the Map". As in the otherworldly riddle stories of Jorge Luis Borges or the dark imaginings of Ambrose Bierce, fact and fantasy are not so easily separated in the architecture of Dark and Other Stories.

As a longtime friend of the author, I took his genius for granted. It was not until I read this book that I saw his understanding encompasses more than literature and history. He has an understanding of the depths of time and space that we ordinary folks do not. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to experience the contact that the human mind and heart sometimes make with real, unsolvable mysteries.
Dark and Other Stories is another win from Gary Mawyer. This is a great read in front of the fire with a hot drink. Mawyer's writing is thoughtful and familiar. His descriptions ring true. You know his characters. They're people you've met, people you're working with now. Dark will leave you wondering...maybe this really is your co-worker...

Fun and engaging, this collection of short stories is authentically spooky. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes terrifying, always entertaining - couldn't put it down.
Reading "Dark and Other Stories" is like listening to Pink Floyd long, suspenseful introductions that carry you over the border of your mundane, everyday reality into an exotic garden of supernatural delights. Mawyer's genius resides in his ability to find the radiance (and danger) in ordinary things. He is a visionary writer, titillating and delighting as he explores cosmic themes with a delicacy and wit reminiscent of Lewis Carroll. My favorite is "Dark"-- a weird and wonderful variation on Roberto Begnini's "Cinema Paradiso". It reminds me of my own childhood fascination--and fear-- of the magical world of the movies. Readers bold enough to plunge into Mawyer's imagination will be rewarded far beyond their expectations!
